Doug - Accepting Applications
Name: Doug
Breed: Golden Retriever
DOB: October 5, 2018
Good with Cats: No
Good with Dogs: No
Good with Kids: Yes (*** Doug has lived with small children in his previous home and with a child in his current home (from newborn to 2.5 years old) but would do better in a home with older children due to his excitability and large size.)
Doug is a handsome, 90lbs, golden retriever who loves to be around his people. He was adopted by his current family in January of 2020 from his first home where he lived with his sister (littermate) for a time and then was brought to Paws in Need to be re-homed. He was fostered for a short period and ultimately his foster family made the decision to adopt him hoping that his relationship with their cat would improve. Despite their efforts they have not been able to have consistent interactions between him and their cat and neither of them seem to be living their best lives, both living on separate floors. This is the primary reason for seeking a new, more appropriate, home for Doug.
Doug has other special considerations that a family should know about prior to considering welcoming him into their home. Since his adoption, Doug has worked closely with a veterinary team to help transition him into his home as well as cope with some of his behaviors. Doug would bark and lunge toward other dogs and some people on-leash, this behaviour has improved through positive training methods. He has a weekly walk with a certified trainer and now rarely reacts to things in the environment. Doug is on twice daily medications to help him with these reactionary behaviours and some underlying arousal that occurs when he becomes excited or stressed. Doug is fearful of many aspects of veterinary visits so he does require additional medications prior to his appointments and he would require full sedation for physical examinations and nail trims. Fortunately, he has recently had a full physical exam with bloodwork and is healthy!
Doug is a very loving dog and deserves a home that can give him a lot of exercise, enrichment, attention and love in return. This is not an easy decision for his family and they would like to work closely with anyone considering adopting him to make sure he finds the best home.
