Adoption Procedure
Adopting a pet is a great option for many people. Paws in Need strives to find forever homes for our animals where they will be loved and cared for. The reason we have adoption procedures and applications is because we want to ensure the animal is the right fit for your family and lifestyle. Adopting a pet is a big commitment, we want to try to fit the right animal with the right home to help make the adoption a success.
Step One:
Fill out an adoption application and submit it to Paws In Need Animal Rescue for review. The application gives us a feel for what type of animal would suit your lifestyle, living situation and activity level. The requirements of each animal vary significantly; every pet is an individual with its own personality and character. A meet and greet is a good thing to do when the whole family will be able to meet the animal and ensure the animal will be a good fit for your family and lifestyle. All the animals we place must go to homes that will love, protect and care for them unconditionally.
Step Two:
After your application has been reviewed, a representative from Paws in Need Animal Rescue will contact you and have a phone interview to talk more about the animal you are interested in and to allow us to get a better feel for what you are looking for in a pet.
Step Three:
Next step is a home check (in person or virtual). This ensures that the particularly animal you are interested in will be going into a home that will be suitable for them. For example: some dogs require a fenced yard, and some do fine without. If you do not own your home, we require written consent from your landlord allowing you to have a pet.
Step Four:
Once everything is checked and approved, your pet will come home to you with a health record, and they will be vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, and dewormed. We also give adoptive homes a collar, leash, a few toys, as well as some of the current food the animal is on (to make for an easier transition to a new food.) The adoption fee must be paid at the time that the animal is dropped off or picked up. At this time, the adoption contract needs to be read through and signed. You MUST agree to ALL the terms of adoption. Although it sounds like a tough process,
we just really want to make sure our animals go to the best possible match, to help make the adoption successful to you and your family, and also help prevent animals from being returned.
Foster to Adopt / Pre-Adoption:
We do occasionally have kittens or puppies available for pre-adoption. We know the importance of a new puppy or kitten getting to their furever home quickly so that the adopter can enjoy all those fun phases! Our pre-adoption program allows the adopter to adopt the pet early. The pets full adoption fee is due, but we will still cover all final vaccines and spay/neuter appointments, with the strict rule that the owner is responsible for getting them to the pre-booked appointments at our partner vets! It's our way of getting you your new baby quickly, while still ensuring they get all the vetting required for our full adoption proceeding.
**Please Note: We do not adopt out of the province of Alberta**
